As many will know HMRC’s digital team are busy developing the technology and infrastructure to make its Making Tax Digital initiative a reality.

They recently turned to BTCSoftware to single-handedly help them road-test the API in live for the Marriage Allowance Transfer in the Self-Assessment return.  The team at BTCSoftware worked closely with HMRC’s digital team having already adapted their own Self-Assessment software to accommodate the new API.

The testing was done in a secure environment with the BTCSoftware and HMRC Developers working closely together.  HMRC needs the help of third party software providers to make its Making Tax Digital initiative come to fruition and BTCSoftware were happy to oblige. The testing was successful and HMRC’s digital team were delighted with the results.

Commenting on the development, BTCSoftware CEO Rob Ellis, said, “There has been much anticipation around what this API would involve.  It, along with the API for National Insurance data for Self-Assessment, were due to go live back in April.  We were very happy to help HMRC test the application in relation to third party software.  It means our Self-Assessment software is fully compliant with the Making Tax Digital API.”

He adds, “We will continue to support HMRC’s digital team in the rollout of Making Tax Digital.  It was great to help this API finally go live and hopefully the software and accounting communities will soon see HMRC publicising the completion of more APIs as they emerge.   I attended a forum last week where some developers still seem to be in the dark that HMRC had implemented this particular one.”

BTCSoftware continues to monitor agents’ feedback to the Marriage Allowance Transfer API and relay its findings to HMRC.
