Your Question:

What is the deadline for my self-assessment tax return?

What is the deadline for my self-assessment tax return?

Your self-assessment tax returns filing deadline for the tax year ending 5 April 2017 are as follows:

Paper filing – 31 October 2017

Online filing if you owe less than £3,000 and want it collected through your next year’s tax code – 30 December 2017

Online filing – 31 January 2018

You will be subject to late filing penalties if you miss the 31 January 2018 deadline. For more information, please see HMRC’s guide.

You have two exceptions when paper filing deadline is extended to 31 January 2018:

  • HMRC’s online systems can’t accept certain items or combinations of information and this might mean that you can’t file online. Where possible the BTCSoftware system will advise you of this, but if you’re in any doubt, BTCSoftware’s support team will be able to help.
  • Certain people are excepted from the 31 October 2017 paper deadline – if this applies to you, HMRC will notify you.
